Wildside

Was a touch disappointing for me. Gill finished, but I missed three stages including the best ones, because I sprained my ankle on stage 3 and couldn't clip in or out of my pedals, so missed a day and a half of riding. The consensus for Gill and I was, good event, good rides, but we are not racers, and the frustrations of dealing with congestion and lack of clear runs at the best technical bits makes it a bit frustrating ultimately...anyway, good fun mostly, enjoy the pics to the right!PA170012Wildside '08 036Wildside '08 098Wildside '08 100

Too much work, but SOME play!

In between the ridiculous amounts of work I seem to have been doing in the new year, Gill and I have squeezed in a bivouac at Lost World crag on Mount Wellington, and a few days at Lake Pedder kayaking, boulder-hopping and swimming the river bed of the serpentine river from the dam down to the confluence with the Gordon, and lazing around (I tied Gill down).

A few photos to the right. Wildside mountain bike stage race this week - very underprepared, but my bike is all serviced up and schmick, so hopefully will survive. Then, Nick and Carol get here, I start my new job in Hyperbarics, and in Feb we nip off to the Southern Alps to climb Mount Aspiring. Tomatoes look great, lemon tree is not enjoying possum attention but is hanging in there, and we had our first roquette this week, with bok choi to come, and carrots on the long finger...Dad, your green fingers would be much appreciated! (But you would be so impressed by my tomatoes!)

Flags are a bit less emotive in Oz, but still,

Imagine my disgust when I discovered this monstrosity sitting in our driveway! I had to drape a Tricolour over it - it reminded me too much of the tatty old Union Jack rags that the local Orange Brethren festooned outside my bedroom window come marching season each year. The owner of said disgrace was none other than Ben Quinn - must have taken the Queen's shilling...PA040011PA040012

The Ben

Just been up to Ben Lomond with Gill and Marls and Serena. Climbed some stunning hard routes - Barbi Di Vendetta 17 (E2 5c) [aha! Just read that this has been upgraded to 18 - explains a lot] and the Alpine expedition Rock-a-Day-Johnny 18 (E2/3 5c) on Frew's Flutes. What an amazing place! 300 metres of mostly straight in jamming in two days...scary hard...back home now....Happy new Year to y'all...
